Hi Alex

I am having difficulty backing up data on my computer with my IM-Index folder because the file names are too long. I notice you did write a post about this in Oct. Have I missed an upgrade to deal with this problem?

By the way, over the Christmas break I put all my information into the IM-Index after owning it for months. Best thing I ever did! Why did I leave it so long? I have never been so organized.

Kind Regards,
Susanne

Hi Suzanne

I saw this as a potential problem just before releasing V2 and shortened the names in the folder structures. You can easily tell whether you have the shortened names: if you have a folder called "Ops", you have have the short names. If it's called "Operations" - you should raise a support ticket at http://OxfordAndBoston.com/Support

If you have the short names, then the problem is due to one or both of two things:

1. You've put the whole structure too far down: I recommend putting it directly under My Documents. For an even shorter path length, you can put it directly under c:

2. The more likely problem is that you've got some deeply nested folder somewhere down in the depths of the structure that you've added.

This is a basic problem with Windows that many people hit with any complex folder structure, of course. I've kept the IM Index structure as flat as possible with short folder names where it goes deep to minimise the chances of this happening.

It's really annoying that Windows lets you create folders as deep as you want, then won't let you move them!

The only thing I can suggest is to put some of the "deeper" content higher up in the "Extensions" folder - keeping it flat as you can - and putting a shortcut and/or a "Note" file in the location where you WOULD have put it. That way you keep everything within the Map folder structure and accessible via the Map, and can still find it when you look at the appropriate topic.

As a matter of interest, where abouts is this occurring? What's the path that's causing the problem?

Regards

Thank you Alex for your prompt reply and your suggestions. I will follow them.

The problem was occuring when I tried to copy my IM-index file from MyDocs and put it on my flash drive to back up to another computer. It kept telling me a file name was too long but wouldn't specify which one. I would have to go deeper and deeper into the file to be able to copy folders which was very time consuming.

I save web pages to folders when I am researching a subject and I think this is the problem because the file name become ridiculously long. I will save them in a Word doc from now on.

I was not aware of this problem with Windows path lengths until I read your post in Oct07 and then remembered it when I started to have problems.

Thanks again,
Susanne

Hi Alex

I wanted to let you know that I moved the Ops folder to MyDocs and when I tried to access folders within it through the map it said that the link was broken. I have moved it back now and it works okay.

Kind Regards,
Susanne
