Hi!

I just purchased the mind map and I can't wait to have it all set up. I do have one question before I finish downloading the bonus (which is awesome!). My hard drive is very full and I have been moving things I don't use that often and really large files to an external hard drive so my computer works better. I have a feeling that some of the items in the bonus package will be things I need to access later down the road and because of this size I might want to store them in the external hard drive. I know when I download all the files they will be moved to the correct files according to the mind map.

So I guess my question is - can the mind map account for items stored on the external hard drive? And if not, do you have any ideas of what I can do to keep those files accounted for?

Thanks!

Gillian

I do apologise for missing this question.

It may be too late, but here is my response...

The IM Index is designed to have all its content within the IM-Index folder itself - and even more so when DAO Installers are used.

With that in mind, here are two suggestions for you:

1. Move your whole IM Index onto your external drive.

That is actually my option since it will only ever grow in size, and also it means you'll be able to use it on any other computer.

2. If your store some files on your external drive, put shortcuts to them in the relevant folders of the IM Index.

I have this same situation, but my external hard drive is also filling up, so I'm interested in the option 2 you suggested.

HOW do I create the shortcuts on the mindmap to files I save on my external hard drive?

You need to be careful with shortcuts because it's too easy to move the original files (or the folders containing them), and then the shortcut no longer points to the file.

But it is easy enough to do using the basic functionality provided by Windows.

  • Right-click on the file and select "Create Shortcut"
  • Find the shortcut in the folder, and move it into the relevant folder in your IM Index folders
