Hi Alex,
I am new to IM Index as you know :-)
Well I am planning to organize all my data as per IM Index...
But here is one very important question in my mind... i.e. I take backup of my all data very often (have bad experience in past ).. so i was thinking how this Index Map will work when i take backup for my upcoming week. How do you manage this issue yourself using IM Index? please advice and give me some tips..
Thanks, Mohsin

Hello Moshin
Welcome to forum!
I don't think you need to change your backup procedure - you're probably already ahead of 90% of people!
The IM Index Mind Map makes life a bit easier because if you backup your IM-Index, you've probably backed up 90% of your material.
However, if you wanted a slighty more advanced backup process, you could do your backing up in two parts:
Frequent Backups:
- Ops folder - InFolder folder (just in case you don't empty it every day!) (Depending on how you use them.. also - Niches folder - MyExt folder)
Less Frequent Backsup
- My IM Info - bin - the Mind Map itself (Depending on how you use them.. also - Niches folder - MyExt folder)
Since My IM Info is likely to house the very large volumes of content with most/all of it being Reference and perhaps not changing so regularly, it would save you time and storeage by not backing it up as regularly as the Ops content - which is smaller in volume, changing more rapidly (on the whole) and more critical to you.
Niches and MyExt would be "Frequent" or "Less Frequent", depending on how you use them.
Regards
Alex

Hi Alex, Thank you very much for the detailed response. It was what i was looking for... Now i know which folder :-) to be backuped where... I am so happy to know that fact that almost every data folder in IM Index is just independent folder. Which can be used anywhere, i mean at any disk or storage device even it does not have IM index installed... Correct me if i am wrong Thanks, Mohsin

If I understand you correctly - then you are wrong.
The folders are simply Windows (or MAC) folders.
The Map contains links to them, and they have to be where they are relative to the Map.
If you move any folder, you won't be able to access it from the Map.

Oh sorry if my wording was confusing...
I was referring to the use of the IM Index folders out of IM Index Map...
i.e. if i simply copy all folder from IM Index ...in any storage media..say my backup disk... which has no MAP installed,....
the Best thing about your program is that I can use that FOLDERS (without map) simply as FOLDERS... all data organized!!!
Yes I know if i want to use IM index MAP from Mindejet Viewer, every folder should be at its relative position! ----
Ok I have another question....
What if i uninstall or reinstall the Mindjet Mindmap viewer for any reason... will all of my IM Index Folders and Files will be safe and remain in IM Index install dir?
The reason i asked this question is because recently (yesterday...) Vista downloaded and installed some updates in my PC at the time of shut down, and after this i cannot open the IM Index Map or Mindjet viewer...maybe i need to reinstall the Viewer..but i am concerned about the Data in Folders..inside the IM Index Install dir ....
Any tips in this regard also?
BTW here is error which Windows shows when i click the Mindjet Viewer or IM index icon...
================ title: Microsoft Visual C + + Runtime Library Message:
Runtime Error! Program: C:\Progr...
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. =================
Have any other user faced the similar problem.. and any solution...
I was thinking to reinstall the Mindjet viewer, but i am concerned as i asked above,,about the folder and data inside the IM Index install dir...
Thanks again for your support, Mohsin

As you pointed out, they are normal files and folders, so you can uninstal/re-install the Viewer quite safely.

You can download an installer for the Viewer on its own here: http://im-index.com/MMVDLBTW here is error which Windows shows when i click the Mindjet Viewer or IM index icon...

I've had no other reports about this. I'd be interested to hear of anyone else with this problem. Alex

Simple - just take a copy of the IM-Index folder (or whatever you named the folder when you installed the product). At it's simplest, you could just make a copy of the folder onto another part of your hard drive. But that won't save you from a hard drive crash - so ideally you should copy it to another drive or onto an online backup system. I've just started using a facility called Mozy which provides 2GB of storage for free, and unlimited storage for $4.95 per month. I shall be adding a session about backups and Mozy in my IM Organized! Coaching Sessions: its seems like a good value, automated and safe solution. But if that's too much trouble, at the very least, make a copy of the IM-Index folder to another part of your drive every so often - just in case you need to go back to older version of a file. Alex

I use Carbonite so everything is always backed up (it runs in the background and you never have to do anything). However, I use Microsoft's "SyncToy" to transfer folders of my choice to a separate harddrive and wanted to know which folder to use because there are two folders I could choose to backup under "My Documents": IM-Index or IM-Index-Backup...which one is best?
Thanks, Linda

Linda
IM-Index-Backup was created when you did an upgrade and selected "Upgrade with Backup". It contains the state of your IM-Index folder at the time you did the upgrade, so it's probably out of date by now.
So - select the IM-Index folder for SyncToy to backup.
If you're sure you've got another backup in place, you can then delete IM-Index-Backup.
Regards
Alex
